If you own a big truck, you probably shell out a pretty hefty sum every month for putting gas in it. And with some analysts talking about gas prices going up to seven bucks a gallon and maybe even more, you’re probably considering changing some of your driving habits. If so, here are four tips from me to you for helping you save gas. It might not make gallons of difference, but every little bit helps.
1. Check the tire pressure. This is one of the most overlooked problems when it comes to gas mileage and proper vehicle maintenance. Find the manufacturer’s recommended PSI and make sure your tires are inflated to that pressure. Every couple weeks, recheck the pressure to ensure they’re still at the right spot and there isn’t any slow leaks.
2. Make the switch to synthetic motor oil. Some outrageous and “too good to be true” statements have been made about synthetic oil. But despite those claims, it can still make your truck up to 10 percent more efficient than regular motor oil.
3. Slow down! Most highways were posted at 55 mph. That’s a good rule to follow for optimum fuel efficiency. You can even go as fast as 60 mph to avoid accidents and slowing people down. But going above 60 could mean a 15 percent decrease in efficiency.
4. Get the lead out. I know trucks are meant for hauling heavy things around, but every 100 pounds of cargo reduces your gas mileage by about two percent. If you don’t need it right away and it’s not too much of a problem to load and unload, keep it off your truck if you want to increase your gas mileage.
Even truck owners can do things to maximize their fuel efficiency. As a result, there’s no reason to be afraid of going to your local GMC truck dealer and getting the truck you want. Check one out today!
